In addition to being a radio personality and comedian, Jim Hawthorne (November 20, 1918 – November 6, 2007) was an American actor and comedian. He was a disc jockey who was a pioneer in the field of “free form” radio broadcasting. Hawthorne was born in Victor, Colorado, and started his professional career as a DJ at a radio station in the city of Denver. He ultimately settled in Los Angeles, California, where he worked in radio, early television, and short films, among other things. He also released his own recordings, such as Turn Your Head, Sweetheart, which became a hit. 

He was a highly famous radio disc jockey in the Los Angeles region who was known for playing funny music. During the late 1960s, he relocated to Hawaii and created the famous Checkers and Pogo children’s television programme, which aired from 1967 until 1982. (long after he passed the role of “Checkers” onto other actors). His Saturday night radio programme, “The Hawthorne Thing,” which aired coast-to-coast on NBC’s Hollywood Radio City from 1950 to 1951, was the… last network radio show to originate at the studios of the network’s Hollywood Radio City. 

This Is Hawthorne, which aired on KLAC/Channel 13 in Los Angeles in the early 1950s, was the first late-night chat programme on television. According to an article in the Los Angeles Times on early television, the programme was the “predecessor of NBC’s Saturday Night Live.” Beginning in 1952, he hosted a daily five-minute weather programme on KNBH/Channel 4 in New York City. Jim went to KYA-San Francisco in 1958 and developed the programme “Voice Your Choice,” which he then took to KDAY. When Hawthorne was performing Instant Weather on KTTV/Channel 11, he was recruited to join KFWB as assistant programme director and morning DJ. 

He ultimately rose to the position of vice president and national programme manager for Crowell-Collier Broadcasting. When he was still at KFWB, he went to work for Sherman Grinberg Productions, where he worked as a writer, producer, and narrator.
