Peter Shilton is married to his wife, Steph Shilton, a jazz vocalist, in March 2015. The couple was initially engaged in 2014.
On December 10, 2016, the lovely pair married at the Parish of St Peter and St. Paul Church in West Mersea. The athletic legend, who lives on Mersea Island with his wife Steph, has recently published a book to raise awareness of the devastation caused by addiction.
Shilton, 72, England’s most capped player, overcame his addiction in 2015 and has spent the years following advocating. Shilton revealed on Sky News on Thursday morning that it took him a “very, very long time” to realize he had an addiction.
Shilton praised Steph’s position, explaining that she didn’t want to pressure her husband for fear of impeding his recovery.
“When you’re dealing with a gambling addict, you do pick up on the indications. The disappearance with his phone, you see some strange behavior,” she explained.
It is just like a cat and mouse game where you’re snooping around looking for proof to back up your suspicions and they’re attempting to hide it from you.
In an interview taken by Daily Mail, she said that she reported her husband’s user ID to a large gambling firm she did not identify and ‘begged’ them for assistance.
Steph initially discovered Peter’s addiction when she examined his bank statement when he was on a vacation to India six years ago.
She admits to feeling sick and had a panic attack after learning he had lost £18,000 in a month. ‘When I got the bank statement, I emailed the betting firm, gave them his user ID, and begged them for help,’ Steph explained.
‘They were completely aware, but they didn’t place any marks on his account, and they didn’t take any action,’ she continued.
‘When he quit, it was such a significant event for me; it was one of the best moments of my life,’ she mentioned.

Peter Shilton, 72, married his first wife, Sue Flitcroft, 69 in September 1970. The couple had an age difference of three years. They gave birth to two boys, Michael and Sam, both of whom went on to play professional football.
Shilton announced his divorce from his wife after 40 years of marriage in December 2011. Sue stuck with him even though it was no longer adjustable.
She remained by him when he was discovered with another man’s wife in his car after it collided with a signpost. He admitted to ‘taking a lady out for dinner,’ was fined £350, and was prohibited from driving for 15 months.
Sue was at his side as he acknowledged to a gambling problem in his 2005 book. ‘They’ve gone through so much, everyone believed they’d be together forever,’ a friend told the Sunday Mirror.
She has truly been a rock for him.’ Shilton and Sue featured on the ITV show Mr and Mrs in 2009, and she cheered him on from the audience when he competed on Strictly Come Dancing in 2010.
His spokeswoman stated that the couple consented to a trial separation after drifting apart.
‘They are enjoying a long and happy marriage with two lovely kids and four sweet grandchildren,’ he continued. ‘There is no third party or other cause for the breakup.’ Unfortunately, it’s simply one of those things.’
Shilton then married his second wife, jazz vocalist Stephanie Hayward, in March 2015. The couple has been together ever since.
Steph is 19 years younger than Shilton.
