Mika was born in Beirut, the third of five siblings, with two older sisters, Yasmine and Paloma, a younger sister, Zuleika, and a younger brother, Fortuné. His parents are an Israeli-born American father and an American-born Lebanese mother (Mary Joan “Joannie”, née Mouakad, daughter of John Mouakad and Odette Farah) (Michael Holbrook Penniman, son of William Frederick Penniman III and Dorothy Dyar). Mika’s father was born in Jerusalem and was a banker. Mika’s father’s father, William Frederick Penniman III, was a diplomat. John Mouakad, Mika’s maternal grandfather, was a Syrian (from Damascus).
Mika stated in numerous interviews prior to the release of his third album that it would be simpler and less layered than the previous one. Mika revealed the album’s title, The Origin of Love, in a French interview on June 17. Mika stated that the album would include a number of French songs, as well as elements of Daft Punk and Fleetwood Mac. He described the album as less childlike and more serious.
Elle me dit, Mika’s first French song, was released as the album’s first single. On July 1, 2011, it was made available online. The song’s video, which was released on August 16, featured French actress Fanny Ardant, as well as a number of other well-known French actors and personalities.
Mika worked with a variety of artists on this album, including Empire of the Sun’s Nick Littlemore, Paul Steel, frYars, Doriand, Priscilla Renea, Billboard, Hillary Lindsey, Pharrell Williams, Benny Benassi, and Klas hlund. Greg Wells was once again involved in the album’s production. MIKA also contributed vocals to the production of The All-American Rejects’ 2012 album Kids in the Attic while working on his own album.
